My husband Devin, is a builder. To say he is passionate about building is an understatement. He will literally stop in the street to admire the way a particular building is constructed. He will drive through a new car park and marvel at the way the concrete has been trowelled to perfection. In October 2015 Devin went to a Passive House Tradesperson course. He knew next to nothing about what Passive House is and was stressed about having a week away from site. But after the first day he came home excited like a kid on Christmas Eve. He was rambling on using terms like 'Mechanical Ventilation System', 'Thermal Bridges' and something about reducing the 'Air Exchange'. My questions were more along the lines of... can I open a window if the house is air tight? Can I have a fire place in a Passive House? Can I adjust the temperature of the house? 22 degrees doesn't sound warm enough for me. Would we have to build a modern style of house? All these questions led me to think that maybe others would be interested to know what it is like to build a passive house, from a home owners/client/female/non-technical perspective? Hence, Open Haus - a look into what it is like to build a passive house, the design, strategies, compromises, benefits and (as with all building processes) frustrations. Fortunately, in early 2016 we were able to purchase a little block of land in beautiful town of Emerald in Victoria, and could start the journey of building and designing a Passive House to call our own. So over the next 6 months we will be able to show you exactly what all those terms, and many more mean, in the hope that you will also be infected with the same passion to build efficient, comfortable and beautiful homes for you and your families to enjoy too.
